Supreme Court of India has recently extended the last date of linking Aadhaar with mobile phone number indefinitely. Now, subscribers have the provision to complete the linking according to their convenience.
For the ease of the mobile phone subscribers, the government has also instructed telecom operators to offer doorstep services to complete the re-verification for senior citizens, disabled, and chronically ill people. The telecom operators are also deploying iris scanning devices at service points to make the linking process smooth. This facility can be used by those individuals who pose difficulties in verifying the identities through fingerprint-based Aadhaar authentication. Even the individuals who apply for a new mobile connection are advised to update their Aadhaar-based e-KYC.
Methods of Aadhaar-Mobile Linking
A subscriber need not link Aadhaar with mobile if he opts for eKYC—an Aadhaar based activation—by providing the biometrics at the time of taking the new connection. Apart from that, all the prepaid and postpaid subscribers are recommended to complete the e-KYC process. Telecom operators use a few methods to complete the Aadhaar and SIM linking. The methods include verification via OTP (one time password), agent assisted authentication, and IVR facility. Besides, individuals can also chose to visit the mobile stores to register their biometrics and complete the linking process.
One-Time Password (OTP)
To help users link their Aadhaar with SIM, the government has suggested telecom operators to facilitate request of OTP on mobile phones. The OTP-based method is useful to verify mobile phones by visiting the telecom operator’s website or by the visiting nearest store. In both the methods, the subscriber will receive an OTP on the mobile number. Below mentioned are both the methods.
Online Mode of Aadhaar and Mobile Number Linking by Using OTP
Using this method subscribers can complete the linking process sitting at the comforts of home. Given below are the step-by-step procedure of linking.
Step 1: Visit the telecom subscriber’s online portal.
Step 2: You should enter the mobile number that is to be Aadhaar linked.
Step 3: The telecom provider will then send an OTP to the registered mobile number.
Step 4: You should enter the OTP and click on “Submit” to proceed further.
Step 5: A consent message will be displayed on the screen. Enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number carefully that is to be linked.
Step 6: The telecom company then sends a request to UIDAI for OTP generation.
Step 7: You will receive a consent message from UIDAI about the e-KYC details. Check those thoroughly.
Step 8: Accept all the terms and conditions and enter the OTP.
Step 9: On completing this, you will receive a confirmation message about your Aadhaar and phone number re-verification.
SMS Based Aadhaar and SIM Card Verification by Using OTP
Below mentioned are the steps that will help a subscriber link the Aadhaar number to the SIM card by visiting a store and sharing the OTP.
Step 1: You should visit the nearest telecom operator.
Step 2: Request the executive at the store for Aadhaar and mobile linking.
Step 3: Submit the mobile number and Aadhaar card details correctly to the store executive.
Step 3: Using the re-verification application, the store executive will then provide a 4-digit verification code that is an OTP to your mobile number.
Step 4: Next, you have to submit the OTP to store executive and provide biometrics.
Step 5: After 24 hours, you will receive an SMS . Reply “Y” to complete the e-KYC process.
Agent-Assisted Authentication
The agent-assisted authentication method is secure and easy. The telecom operators are strictly instructed on not disclosing the KYC details of a subscriber to any agent. The subscriber’s valuable details are not stored on the agent’s device. This method is also used for SIM-verification and insurance verification.
Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS)
Interactive Voice Response System is basically a specially designed app that is used for Aadhaar verification. It is easy and users can conveniently link their Aadhaar number with mobile using this method.
Linking Aadhaar to Mobile Number by Using IVR
The government of India to help all the telecom subscribers has come up with a single number for linking Aadhaar to SIM using interactive voice response(IVR) services. All the pre-paid as well as postpaid subscribers should follow the below mentioned steps to seed Aadhaar with phone number.
Step 1: Dial in the toll-free number 14546 from a mobile phone.
Step 2: The IVR (interactive voice response) system will then verify whether you are resident of India or an NRI. If you a resident of India, press 1 on your phone.
Step 3: The IVR will then ask you to share your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
Step 4: The system will then repeat the last four-digits of the Aadhaar number. Follow it carefully to avoid any errors and press on 1 to confirm.
Step 5: Next, the IVR will ask to share the registered mobile number. The UIDAI will then send an OTP to the mobile number.
Step 5: A consent message will be played on the IVR that will ask you to allow the telecom operator to use your name, photo and date of birth mentioned on the UIDAI database. Confirm that.
Step 6: Enter the OTP correctly.
Step 7: On entering the OTP, press on 1 to complete the Aadhaar and mobile number re-verification.
